A portrait of Red Hayagriva

18th century, Tibet or Mongolia, Hayagriva, mineral pigments on wood, at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York (USA).

Standing on a lotus surrounded with flames, Red Hayagriva wields a skull-tipped mace or club in his right hand and makes a wrathful gesture with the other. He has a human hide and an elephant hide slung on his back, a tiger skin knotted round his waist, and is adorned with a garland of freshly severed heads, snakes, a five-skull crown, large earrings, and, among his flaming hair, a green neighing horse’s head,  which is his distinctive feature. Before him, a monkey is eating a fruit from a tree, a mare is feeding her foal, and what may be a kiang is standing near a round jewel.
